Tampa Tarpon Fishing
Tampa Tarpon Fishing
Huge jumps, powerful runs, spectacular air, and legendary battles. This is Tampa tarpon fishing at its finest. Tampa Bay is home to some of the most spectacular sport fish in the world-the original “silver king” tarpon.
Tarpon are the giants of the Tampa flats. Adult tarpon can range in size from 50 up to 200 + pounds, with an average around 100. Their shiny silver bodies are a thrill to spot from the boat and a hookup promises an unforgettable battle. Tarpon strike aggressively, leap spectacularly, and run as hard as any fish.
The Tampa tarpon season begins to heat up in March when they begin migrating to the flats to feed. The action warms up with the weather, as huge numbers of these silver giants converge on Tampa’s grass flats in the summer. Multiple hookups are common in the peak of the Tampa tarpon season. The action tapers off slowly as summer turns to fall and the season is finished by November. Out of season catches of resident tarpon are not unheard of particularly inshore in the warmer waters of the mangroves and back bays.
During the peak of the season, sight fishing for tarpon is the only way to go. The flashing silver bodies, clear waters of Tampa Bay, and huge numbers of fish make sight fishing a thrilling experience sure to keep you rod busy and leave your arms totally spent by the end of the day.
For any backcountry fishing enthusiast the Tampa tarpon migration is a fishing experience that can’t be missed. For the first time tarpon angler Tampa tarpon fishing will be a thrill like you’ve never experienced before.
